hardparade: (harry potter; remus & sirius)

Ooooh, it's been such a long time since I've used my Harry Potter tag. It feels weird, but good. I really do wish I'd made the decision to start rereading the books sooner, you know - in my mind it always seemed like it would be this huge time-consuming task, but I'm already on Order of the Phoenix and it's been like...not long at all. And of course I'm enjoying it immensely and getting overly emotional because I know what's coming, and being reminded of everything I used to ship, and trying to find all the old fic I remember. It's all just so lovely and nostalgic. ♥

To celebrate that, a mix for my OTP -

Title: nothing like you & i
Maker: likecharity
Subject: Remus/Sirius (Harry Potter)
Includes: 11 individual .mp3s uploaded on Mediafire, plus .rar and .zip to download from either Mediafire or Megaupload.
Notes: I wrote slightly excessive ones, so they are under the cut.

Some form of this mix has been on my computer for years, so it seems about time that I shared it. It took me longer than I expected to organise it though - the art and the song order caused me some difficulty. I guess I just really want it to be perfect because Remus/Sirius is my OTP and I've never actually created anything for them before, and it feels like I need to do the ship justice or something? And of course I was also hindered by my inability to listen to the whole thing through without crying. :|

The art was particularly hard because there are no actors or anything that fit the image of the characters in my head, plus I know that everyone has slightly different interpretations and I didn't want to use anything that might seem completely and utterly wrong to anybody. (Yes, I over-think these things.) So eventually, trying to keep faces out of it, I went with a couple of screencaps from the movie Dream Boy and one from Prisoner of Azkaban, a non-porny picture from a '70s gay porn magazine (back right, with added scars), and one image of unknown origin (front right, let me know if you recognise it!). Oh, and paw prints, which came from here. XD

Oh, also - yeah, there is a Shakira cover in there, which might seem bizarre, but I don't know, listen to it. Something about it is just very them to me somehow. Maybe it helps that it's a man singing. (And can't you imagine Sirius saying something like "lucky that my breasts are small and humble/so you don't confuse them with mountains", or is that just me? I may have gone slightly wrong.) There are a few songs that are so perfect that I wanted to quote much more of the lyrics (like the entirety of 'Brothers on a Hotel Bed') but my notes are already making this a very long entry so it's probably best that I didn't.

If you want any clarification on why I chose the songs, I'd be very happy to share my thoughts. And you know, I'll try to actually make sense and not just word-vomit all my feelings at you. (But 'try' is the operative word in that sentence.)

Right, I'll shut up now.

  1. isobel campbell & mark lanegan; black mountain []
(Remus's POV then Sirius's, pre-Azkaban and then Azkaban era.)
i know a dog much blacker than night
who lives in a house where nothing is right
all sorrow, unloving, riches at bay
"i won't share their future, though i share their name"
(...) some dream of coins or some beauty's find
but i want the truth while i serve my time
most complex and pain, i'd share it with you
the moon looks bright, so come say i do

  2. joseph arthur; tattoo []
    (Sirius's POV, Azkaban era.)
i miss the days when you were in my world
it seems like it was a lifetime ago
(...) i wonder what you must think about me
what i heard is you consider me dead
i guess that's fair of you
i never was good to you
i'm ashamed, for making you feel all my pain
when i sleep, sometimes i still think we speak
is it a dream, is it a dream?

  3. coldplay; see you soon []
    (Sirius's POV, Azkaban era.)
so you lost your trust and you never should have
    you never should have
don't break your back if you ever see this
    don't answer that
in a bulletproof vest, with the windows all closed
i'll be doing my best, i'll see you soon
in a telescope lens, when all you want is friends
    i'll see you soon

  4. the perishers; nothing like you & i []
(Remus's POV post-Azkaban, with a hint to later and Remus/Tonks.)
we spent some time together drinking
spent some time just thinking about days of joy
as our hearts started beating faster
i recalled your laughter from long ago
there's nothing like you and i
    (...) there's nothing like you and i
so why do i even try?

  5. bloc party; i still remember []
(Remus's POV post-Azkaban, looking back on Hogwarts days.)
    i still remember
    how you looked that afternoon
    there was only you
you said "it's just like a full moon"
blood beats faster in our veins
we left our trousers by the canal
and our fingers, they almost touched
    (...) we should have run
i would go with you anywhere

  6. tv on the radio; i was a lover []
    (Sirius's POV, OotP-era.)
i'm locked in my bedroom, so send back the clowns
my clone wears a brown shirt
and i seduce him when there's no one around
(...) and we liked to party
    and we kept it live
and we had a three volume tome of contemporary slang
to keep a handle on all this jive
(...) i was a lover before this war...

  7. mundy; whenever, wherever (shakira cover) []
    (Sirius's POV, OotP-era.)
never could imagine there were only
ten million ways to love somebody
(...) lucky i have strong legs like my mother
to run for cover if i need it
(...) whenever, wherever, we're meant to be together
i'll be there and you'll be near, and that's the deal my dear
thereover, hereunder, you will never have to wonder
we can always play by ear, that is the deal my dear

  8. death cab for cutie; brothers on a hotel bed []
    (Sirius's POV, OotP-era.)
    you may tire of me
as our december sun is setting
for i'm not who i used to be
no longer easy on the eyes
    but these wrinkles masterfully disguise
    the youthful boy below
who turned your way and saw
something he was not looking for
both a beginning and an end
    but now he lives inside
    someone he does not recognise
when he catches his reflection on accident

  9. the shins; pink bullets []
(Remus's POV, looking back on Hogwarts days after Sirius's death.)
oh, what a contrast you were to the brutes in the halls
my timid young fingers held a decent animal
    over the ramparts you tossed
the scent of your skin and some foreign flowers
tied to a brick, sweet as a song
the years have been short, but the days were long
    (...) i don't look back much as a rule
and all this way before murder was cool
but your memory is here and i'd like it to stay
warm light on a winter's day

  10. bloc party; signs []
    (Remus's POV after Sirius's death.)
the last time we slept together
there was something that was not there
you never wanted to alarm me
but i'm the one who's drowning now
(...) i see signs now all the time
that you're not dead, you're sleeping
    i believe in anything
that brings you back home to me

  11. snow patrol; if i'd found the right words to say []
    (Remus's POV after Sirius's death.)
if i'd found the right words to say
i'd tell you you're safe and take hold of your hand
i'll be there by your side for the rest of your life
our bodies could fall off the end of the world
(...) i will follow your ghost as it climbs up the rock-face
and lie with you on the grass above
and i'd like to change all this
and i'd like to wake up from this
    by your side...

BROTHERS ON A HOTEL BED WAS MY FIRST REMUS/SIRIUS SONG. AND IT WILL CONTINUE TO BE THE MAIN ONE BECAUSE IT IS PERFECTION. Auuuuugh it just fits so perfectly with the changes in their relationship after Azkaban and having to adjust and like, I can imagine it taking a long time for them to be intimate with each other again and there'd be a slight awkwardness to their relationship that would be so unfamiliar, because Remus spent so long seeing Sirius in such a different light, and of course Sirius has been through hell in Azkaban and he would have changed so much. And it would be frustrating because they'd both keep thinking back to the early days and how easy things were then. AND THEN THE WHOLE BIT ABOUT THE MOTORBIKE, IN THE LYRICS. It's just so perfect. ;_;

I knew word vomit would happen if I ended up trying to expand on my feelings about any one of these songs because AUGH I have so many feelings about each one. I get really obsessive about songs flowing into each other properly so I kept changing the order and then listening through to see if it sounded okay, and EVERY TIME I ended up crying. This ship is RIDICULOUS with its heart-destroying ways. You were probably quite smart to avoid it for as long as you did. I keep being like "THE MARAUDERS. SO TRAGIC. AUGH!" to various family members and of course everyone is just like "yeah, it's awful..." and I just want to be like "BUT REMUS AND SIRIUS AND THEIR DOOMED LOVE. SOMEBODY CRY WITH ME." It feels really masochistic to even ship it. I've been reading a lot of fic and sticking to the fluffy Hogwarts-era stuff because I'm afraid of what anything else will do to me.

Word-vomiting forever even in real life apparently. Thank you so much for this comment, it is lovely and I feel slightly less ridiculous now. Not to say that you are ridiculous. But you know what I mean. I'm glad you like the art because that was probably my main worry about the whole thing. I almost made it without any pictures at all but that was very dull. I forgot about the sock picture in SBP oooomg. That cap comes from this scene in Dream Boy where the two boys are lying down in the woods and kissing in the leaves and it just made me think of R/S so much and I had to use it.

I was hoping to comment with, you know, WORDS and stuff, but it seems like I can't. Remus/Sirius gives me ALL THE POSSIBLE FEELINGS IN THE ENTIRE WORLD and your song choice is flawless and spot-on and I'm even afraid to download it because I'm nearly crying just by reading the lyrics and your notes, so, you know, tears will be everywhere.

And oh, I absolutely love the artwork. Sexy and adorable and so damn fitting.

Brb, downloading everything, crying my heart out, and possibly rereading Shoebox Project against my better judgement.

And I'm so glad you like the art and the song choices auuugh. It's really weird because the songs have been on my R/S playlist for seriously so long, and when I started turning them into a proper mix I suddenly wondered whether my reasoning would make any sense to anyone else. Like, you know, if the songs just worked for me because I'd been associating them with the pairing for so long. It's hard to see them from other people's point of view. SO I'm glad that you agree that they fit, basically.

see, i wouldn't mind at all to read your whys on the songs. *hint hint*

i hate Remus/Sirius. you know? i really hate it. there are just SO MANY FEELINGS with these two, it's not just a cute ship, with cute stories and cute endings, it's all so raw and tragic and real. Jo herself could come slap me in the back of the head and call me stupid for OTPing them, and write a thousand books on how they're not canon and i still wouldn't buy it. ugh. stupid boys with their stupid love and their stupid destinies. ;______;

now, if you'll excuse me, i gotta go cry under blankets while listening to this and clutching my copies of PoA and OotP, in which all the R/S parts are highlighted, mind you.

Hee! Well, I don't think I could go through all of them and have it fit in one comment, but let me know if there's a particular one or two you're curious about. :)

Auuugh, I know. All of this. It's the most painful ship ever and no one will ever be able to convince me it's not canon.

I hope you enjoy(ed) listening to it. If 'enjoy' is the right word. Probably not, when crying under blankets is involved. I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL.

Ugh, perfect, perfect choices <3
But so sad :(
Of course, there's no way it's not going to be sad but, but ... I guess I always deal with their tragedy by just pretending it didn't happen like that. You know, that Sirius didn't go through the portal, and Remus wasn't killed in the Battle of Hogwarts (and neither were Fred or Tonks, for that matter) and, well, everyone lives happily ever after. And everything is fine, and nothing hurts.
I can't deal with it any other way, I guess. Self-delusion. Gotta love it ;)

Despite what I said recently (I was a bit rushed :)), I read the first two books again fairly recently (well, last year actually) but not PoA and onwards, which I really must get onto sometime soonish. Prisoner of Azkaban was always my favourite, and that mainly for Sirius, whom I loved pretty much from the first. Definitely my favourite adult character in the books :'(

Oh by the way, I've heard of the Shoebox Project but I've never read and I'm not sure what it is :( Do you have a link at all?

I hope you're well <3

Thank you! Lol, it is completely understandable to just live on in denial when it comes to how things end for them...I'm halfway through OotP now and just DREADING Sirius's death. I have accepted the whole thing but I tend to try and focus on the Hogwarts days otherwise I do just cry whenever I think of them. (Totally going the self-delusion route when it comes to Fred though. NOPE, STILL ALIVE, WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT.)

I hope you get around to reading PoA soon! I wasn't that bothered about it when I first read it but it's definitely my favourite now.

And oooomg, you need The Shoebox Project in your life NOW! It's this amazing multipart fic set when the Marauders are at Hogwarts, and it's gorgeously written and really witty, and it has art too (that's what my icon is from!). It builds up beautifully - Remus and Sirius don't get together for a long, long time but the gen is just fantastic and the whole thing is basically canon to me. Everything is so well thought-out and just...I can't recommend it enough. The community where it was originally posted got hacked, but someone had uploaded PDFs of each chapter here (http://lomara.org/sbp). :)

The mix and the art are gorgeous gorgeous...and just, oh jeez...just reading through your notes, and everyone's comments is making me all wibbly for this ship again. Like everyone else here, it seems, I've just got so much emotion attached to these two that thinking about their story...and how it all plays out...really does hurt. But in the good, a tale well told, kind of way.
Also, ohh showbox :) I just addicted a newfound RL hp addict friend to it this summer, so it was wonderful to see it all again through her eyes!
Thank you so much! I can't wait to listen! Also, wow...just from reading the lyrics, it's crazy how much that first song, black mountain, fits them!

Thank you!! I hope you like it. Yeah, when I found the Black Mountain song I thought of them instantly - it's just WEIRD how well the lyrics fit.

Re: Shoebox, I'm trying to get my cousin to read it because she's obsessed with Harry Potter, but she doesn't read fic at all so I thought the slashy parts might weird her out a bit. But I just think EVERYONE should read it. And I bet it is really nice to hear the thoughts of someone who's reading it for the first time.

Argh, yeah, I did have the bonus of knowing she already liked slash (just of the harry/draco variety)...but no, you're right...shoebox is just so good, you just want to share it with eeeeveryone! (when I was reading it the first time, I totally read some of it to my mom, and she was pretty much like "I don't know what this is, but I'll go with it")
Now the problem is, I always wish there was a shoebox movie...and alas, that's a thing that never can be. ;)

Also! Hooray Noel Fielding!!! (the hypothetical Boosh movie is one of the other things I can't wait for!!!)

Omg, I totally read bits of it to my Mum too without really explaining what it was. XD My cousin says she prefers to leave things to the imagination though, in terms of what's not described in canon, so it sounds like fanfiction probably isn't her thing. She said she might check it out when she's finished rereading the books though. I will try and convert her! I found myself wishing for a Shoebox movie the whole time I was rereading it recently too, actually. It would be so awesome.

♥ I didn't know they were thinking of making a movie! That would be cool.

Fashionably late by only, what, two months? I've been going through and downloading (& listening to) every Deathly Hallows, Harry, Luna, and/or Remus mix I can find. I should mention that I'm not a Remus/Sirius shipper, as I think that's significant. It's (relatively) easy to make a great mix for shippers. It's another thing entirely to make a great, shippy mix for someone who prefers the pair in question as friends. I've been listening to all these fanmixes in the background as I play casual games (as I don't have the patience for listening to them solely and accidentally tune them out if I try to read much) but this one made me sit up and listen so I turned it up and switched to a more mindless game (PuppetShow games, not for the mindless). Not a lot of fanmixes strike me that hard.

Brothers On a Hotel Bed will forever be a Supernatural Dean/Sam song as that was the first context I heard it and it's so startlingly them. That said, for once I actually could put that aside and see it in context of the pairing. I do think that it's a very appropriate song for R/S.

I'd honestly be interested in your entire thought process for this fanmix, sound choices and all, because it's just that damn good. Maybe as a coda to this post? I see I'm not the only one who'd want such a thing. :)

Speaking of so damn good, I don't think you have anything to worry about on the song order. It worked really, really well. I could see a logical progression to the songs as it went along without even reading your lyric choices (I rarely do that until I've listened so as not to get preconceived notions). The lyric choices were awesome too, for that matter. It writes a little story... Seriously, I don't know if you intended that but read them start to finish once and you'll see what I mean. I think each song fit and fit what you meant it to fit (i.e. Sirius at Azkaban, Remus post-Sirius) rather than seeming to fit but go somewhere else. That's what I mean about the structure of the songs working.

The song choices were also great, especially if you listen all the way through, as the songs just mesh with each other really well. It's a fluid sounding fanmix, which is always a plus for me (jarring ones have their place, I suppose, but I like gradual builds or changes of mood/tone than that). I already mentioned BOAHB. I also especially like the inclusion of TV On The Radio's I Was a Lover. Not only do I think it's lyrically appropriate but it signals a brief shift of tone from the wistful, an upturn before things come crashing down into pessimism again with BOAHB. That really works (I am using really far too much but I want to emphasize it goes past merely working alright). I even liked the inclusion of Coldplay though I usually avoid it like a plague (too much over exposure in fanmixes and I love Spies so much I'm not sure they could top it for me). Pink Bullets was also a good choice IMO, very fitting for Remus's nostalgia. All in all each of the song choices work perfectly or nearly so for me. It built a version of the R/S relationship I could actually get behind, for all that I don't ship them even one little bit.

I think the only thing that could make this better is the inclusion of Death Cab for Cutie's The Ice Is Getting Thinner (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_7avY5NpZ4) after BOAHB as a POV song for Remus during the tail end of OOTP when Sirius is too stir crazy to deal with and he knows a blow up is just waiting to happen. The link has the lyrics but to highlight:
We're not the same, dear as we used to be (...)
And there was little we could say
And even less that we could do
To stop the ice from getting thinner
Under me and you

We buried our love in a wintery grave
A lump in the snow was all that remained
(...) and the ice kept getting thinner
With ever word that we'd speak

I even think pairing the two songs by the same artist could work thematically and aesthetically. Not to butt in on your fanmix, of course. I just remember thinking that TIIGT would be a perfect fit when I listened to it the second? (third?) time.

Anyway, I've rambled on enough, I think. TL;DR: Great fanmix. Best I've seen for R/S.

Ohhhh my god. I am so so sorry I didn't reply to this - I don't think LJ ever sent me a notification for it, I've literally only just stumbled across it now (like ten months later!!) because I happened to be looking at my old fanmixes. And I know that this is ridiculously late but I don't want you to think that I saw your comment and just ignored it, because it's an AMAZING comment and I really want you to know that I appreciate it. Thank you so much for taking the time, I love getting long comments like this and it's especially awesome to get one on something I put so much thought into. This is definitely the mix that I've worked the hardest on, and it also feels quite personal because the songs have been tied to the pairing in my mind for so long. I'm just kind of thrilled that it all made sense to you and told a story because that's exactly what I wanted. It's all the more flattering considering you're not even a Remus/Sirius shipper!

I agree that The Ice Is Getting Thinner is a very fitting song! And I wish I'd seen this comment at the time because I don't really feel able to explain my thought process for the mix now, when so much time has passed since I made it, and of course you might no longer be interested anyway. It seems as though you really got what I was going for with the song choices anyway, though! :)

Thanks again!!
