I think one of the things that makes Reid my favorite character is the complexities and layers in all of his relationships. With Spencer and Nathan, you can feel their connection and Spencer's desperation to save Nathan: from his demons and from HIMSELF even though you know, Spencer is smart enough (too smart for his emotional good) to know that he can't.
With Nathan there's this desire to fit in, to belong and to be UNDERSTOOD and Spencer gives him all of that. There's both damaged in a lot of the same places and have their individual demons and they both try (in very different ways) to rise above that damage and fight their demons...and they both also have given into those demons. I think Nathan understands Spencer in a way that no one else quite does or really can and vice versa.
I adored this fic. I won't lie...I was so hoping it wasn't Nathan (or left ambiguous as to whether it was him) b/c for me, its his potential for darkness that I'm attracted to, and "living on borrowed time" feel his inevitable descent into that darkness colors his relationship with Spencer that intrigues me. Which isn't to say this wasn't AMAZING because you combined two of my fave ships (H/R and N/R) and did it FLAWLESSLY. I loved every word and adored it, just adored it. I felt everybody's emotions and they were intense and in character with just the right mix of hurt and comfort. I even liked the bittersweet ending because it fits the tone of the fic.
Thank you for writing this, and thank you for sharing it with all of us.
