:(
*sigh*
I was thinking about this earlier, it's kind of random but whatever. My Mum is American, right, and while I've lived in England all my life, there's a lot of American slang (and just, general American words) that I've picked up on. And spelling. And you'd think that these things would make it easier for me to switch between writing fic about American characters (Frank and Dwayne, Drake and Josh, etc) and writing fic about British characters (Harry Potter people, Skins people, etc.)
But it doesn't at all. Because my Mum is American, the typically American things she's said have never been commented on, really. She's never said, "and by the way, that's an American saying" or anything, haha. So I've never known the difference, except with obvious stuff like 'pants'. Ha. The number of times I've said something to a friend and they've just looked at me like wtf? is insane.
My basic point is, it's really hard for me to switch between American and British fic. There are some things that I know are American or British, obviously. I mean, I say 'bugger' and 'bloody' and everything, and I would never use those in a Frank/Dwayne fic. But sometimes I get so mixed up.
I suppose it must be hard for people who have no idea about a certain country, too. But when I first started writing about Americans I thought, oh, this'll be easy because of Mum. And it really wasn't.
Anyway yeah, rant over.
