hardparade: (weeds; silas & nancy)

WEEDS RAMBLING TIME. Okay, it's been a while since I watched this, so it might be tricky. I've got notes that I took at the time, but some of them are vague and I don't remember the context. There's a lot of them though. This season was a goldmine for family weirdness, but it is DARK AS HELL, I forgot about that! Essentially, it's horrific, so I'll be ignoring a lot of things. Also I've been marathoning The Mighty Boosh lately, so my brain has gone totally weird, but let's stick it out and hopefully this will make reasonable amounts of sense.

And I'm using my 'be more incestuous! oh wait impossible' tag for this entry, on account of this being the season in which SHANE MASTURBATES TO NAKED PICTURES OF HIS OWN MOTHER. If that doesn't justify the use of said tag, I don't know what does.

The first thing I've taken note of is that on Silas's birthday, he says he doesn't turn 18 until 10:47. Which is INTERESTING, because Nancy says in season 7 that he was born at 10:59. Those times are so close together that I can't imagine it's just a continuity fuck-up, so I guess it might mean that Nancy has forgotten the exact time. Which is really sad to me, because I wanted so badly to believe her whole "I remember all the details about your birth" speech.

Silas and Shane were pretty incestuous this season. "I'm a big fag so you can suck my dick." "You just told your brother to suck your dick. Gross." (Nancy is so mature.) And Shane was masturbating in the bunkbed that he and Silas shared. OF COURSE. And then he lost his virginity while Silas was downstairs. And Silas wasn't particularly skeeved out by that, for some reason. (Speaking of—SHANE LOST HIS VIRGINITY IN A THREESOME. He's so awesome.) And I like how Silas walks this weird line between being responsible and not. Like he refuses to give Shane weed, and offers to be his legal guardian and stuff, but he doesn't really know what he's supposed to do about the whole sex thing.

Oh my god, and so much Silas/Nancy stuff. That bit in the bathroom where she strokes his hair! And making snide comments about the way she's dressed, and "Do you have a date or something? (...) It smells like you have a date." And Nancy brings up Silas's 'mysterious sleepaways' and he's all "You noticed? I thought you were too busy not going on dates." WHY does the whole thing read like two people trying to make each other jealous?? Ack.

And of course then there's Lisa. Which is such an obvious Nancy parallel that it's not even worth going into, but—single Mom who wants to sell weed with him. HELLO. I didn't remember the showdown between Lisa and Nancy, either, when Nancy shows up and is all "Rad's gonna be seventeen sooner than you think. He's a good-looking boy." Nancy is such a badass. I do like how much it obviously upsets her, though, and it's weird because it seems like it's less about Lisa taking advantage of Silas, but more just about her taking him away from Nancy. Like the actual sex part is irrelevant (except that she clearly is disturbed by that part of the parallel) and it's more just that Silas wants to spend time with this OTHER Mom, you know?

LOL when Silas is like "Clock strikes eighteen and I'm done." NO YOU'RE NOT. And then when things with Lisa start to fall apart and he's so sheepish—I love that scene where he comes home and Nancy starts in all bitchy like "You forget your pruning shears?" but then she sees that he's upset and she just goes into total Mom mode. And the things she says, asking if he needs anything washing, and telling him he can raid the fridge, take the car, play his music too loud...it's like, all things that she knows a normal seventeen year old son should be doing, and she wants to encourage that. They even LOOK more like a mother and a son in this scene, like she's in more Mom clothes and he looks younger somehow.

Random comment: I like how when Rad says to Nancy "My Mom says you dress like a prostitute," Silas tells him to shut up, even though he's implied that himself a whole bunch of times. It's clearly okay when he says it, but he'll defend her against anyone else. ♥ And oh my god, the customer who thinks Lisa is Silas's Mom?? OH MY GOD. And Silas CALLING HER MOM, like, jokingly, but—just, oh my god. And then trying to be partners with Nancy AGAIN (he just never gives up) and she is totally resistant until Silas says Lisa told him she'd say no—and then suddenly it's like a competition and Nancy has to prove Lisa wrong so she says she'll think about it. And I love how, even though she shoots him down in the end, he thanks her and he really seems sincere. He's making such an effort to get her to take him seriously.

Also, this quote is spot-on:

Silas: C'mon, Andy. You don't act like an adult. None of us do. We're all a bunch of babies, waiting for Mom to make the money, always looking for Mommy's approval, asking Mommy's permission. Shane's right. She's unreliable. She's unavailable. It's time for us to take on some responsibility, because for all we know, she's going to prison.

And Nancy's birthday message to Silas is like the saddest thing in the world. Thanking him for raising himself. And adding the cookies to the basket. Auugh.

I like how Shane is super clingy with Nancy for the first half of the season, and then because he feels so ignored, he just ends up kind of going off the rails. Like, he just wants to come with her EVERYWHERE, even to buy dust ruffles. "Can't I do drug things with you guys?" ♥ And then he takes on the responsibility of fixing up the house, and FLIPS OUT when he thinks Andy's taking the contracting job away from him. Another one of those things where he's sort of trying to take on the 'Dad' role.

And I'm sure watching his mother suffocate someone to death helped with all those psychopathic tendencies he has. -_- And I like how he says he would kill Nancy if she asked him to. I don't know why, it's just interesting. I also like that one of the rumours going around the school is that he killed his Dad, because this season is where his Oedipus complex REALLY kicks in, with the pictures and everything. OMG THE PICTURES. The scene where he and Isabelle find them and Nancy comes home from her spanking and Shane's all shifty and Isabelle gets flirty with her—HILARIOUS. And of course when Nancy finds out and gives Shane and Silas that EPIC TALK, and Shane pulls the blanket over his head. BEST SCENE EVER.

When she finds out about the threesome-sex, and he's like "Well, where were YOU last night?" it's as if it's on the same level, you know? It's like with Silas, like they're saying that if she's gonna disappear off at night and have sex then they're gonna do that too. And Nancy handles it SO BADLY. Calling the girls sluts and then spanking him violently with a rolled up newspaper. A+ PARENTING. It's interesting that when Isabelle gets Shane to describe losing his virginity, he says "Confusing. Brisk. Messy. I dunno. My Mom hit me." Like already, Nancy is an important factor in the memory. An association.

It's kind of spooky hearing him say "Sometimes I wish she'd get arrested already. At least we'd know where she is. And seriously, isn't it only a matter of time?" Because yes it is, and when she DOES get arrested it's all for him, and he's heartbroken. It's such an interesting progression. I love his storyline this season actually, it seems like the one that's most thought-out and reasonable in a weird way. Gradually coming to resent Nancy, to the point where he has "nothing to say" to her, and yet underneath it all he still wants to be a part of the family business, and by the finale he's dealing. Gah.

Judah showed Andy the naked pictures of Nancy!! I love how Andy's like "I wonder if they're still here, I'll look for them tomorrow." Haha. And when they make out in the car as a cover! "Don't enjoy this." And Nancy telling him he kisses well, and you can't tell if she's being genuine or if it's just further manipulation. OH GOD and that scene where Andy comes in while Nancy's in the bath? That scene is AMAZING. I love the intimacy of it and how Andy's sort of uncomfortable and excited by seeing her naked so he's joking around, and she just doesn't even have the energy to even be irritated by him. And how he puts bubbles in the bath for her, and just listens, because he knows she needs to talk. Sometimes I don't really get why people ship them, but with this scene, I totally get it.

Andy's realisation that he's kind of in love with her is so heartwarming and hilarious. And honestly, I think that's where I started to properly like him.

Andy: She has done some less than prudent or thoughtful things, but she's Nancy, and we love her. All of us. Love. Her. In a Mom-loving way. (cuddling cushion) Not in any other way.
Shane: I'm getting a popsicle. Anyone want?
Andy: Yes. I would like a popsicle.

His delivery of that line is THE BEST. And speaking of Andy, he's such a perv towards the boys this season, talking about Shane sleeping on his old sheets and Silas looking at one of Judah's old Playboys and his old stains still being on the wall. (Lol, Nancy: "My children are sleeping next to their unborn cousins. I'm thrilled.") And then, of course, listening to Shane masturbate, GRINNING TO HIMSELF, and then checking to see what he was masturbating to. ANDY, YOU ARE THE WORST UNCLE. I love the way he says "Oh, buddy. Oh, no," when he sees the pictures and connects the dots, though. It's so...like, you really get the sense that he's not judging Shane at all, he's just sad for him, and that's so special, because basically ANY OTHER PERSON in that situation would at least show some sort of disgust.

I've also written that apart from Doug and Celia's storylines, I really liked the finale, but I've actually forgotten what happened in the finale now. Oh dear.

It looks like my season 5 post, if I ever get around to that, is going to be the longest yet. I have issues. :/

ok ok. I FINISHED SEASON FOUR. HOLY GOD. thiisss ok.

i almost wish shane didn't lose his virginity this season. because he's only thirteeeen and it's to these two random chicks and i kind of wish it meant more to him? it's not like he has the greatest examples of sex+love around the house, for obvious reasons, but i wish it was better for him. YOU'RE ONLY 13 SHANE auuugh i'm almost irritated with him, like a little mad or something. he's just so set on becoming part of the "family business" and acting so much older than he is, i just want him to slow down.

umm silas/nancy foooreverrr.

and LISA and tying that into the whole talk nancy gives shane and silas about the pictures and fucking moms AND when silas says to lisa that they should move in together?? like he's gonna take over and be the dad, just like with megan, wanting a kid, and knowing she has a ten year old son and just being like "yeah i met him" i mean, what, does he think he's gonna move in with lisa and take care of her kid and support them with weed sandwiches?? NOT HAPPENING. the result of too much nancy induced sexual tension, that's what silas has i swear.

the bday message awwwh i can imagine the woman on the other line, like how many people do you get calling and saying stuff like that. i'd be like IT'S OKAY NANCY YOU TRIED. poor dear.

but loool those ridiculously hot pictures of nancy and SHANE, my goodness. how awkward. and of course putting them in that book like no one's gonna find them?? especially after andy, like, watching him put them away HE PROBABLY WANTED ANDY TO FIND THEM and then tell nancy and idk. i'm sure he had some motive haha and andy and nancy, yes i can see the shipping reasons there. it's like he's one of the only people that doesn't judge nancy and the fact that she's able to open up to him and tell him she was the one who sold out about the tunnel when she didn't want ANYONE to know, that's something you take to the grave with you, but she told andy and andy listened and sort of comforted her and i totally get it too : ) and he's adorable.

THE FINALE. WITH ESTEBAN DISCOVERING NANCY SOLD HIM OUT AND NANCY TELLING ESTEBAN THAT SHE'S PREGNANT and i'm totally spazzing, it's ridiculous. and part of me wants to believe that nancy's pregnant but the other part of me is like "that's a really good way to get out of dying, telling the guy ordering your death that you're pregnant with his child" and i kind of think that the ultrasound picture is just of silas or shane, one that she's kept and thought to bring along like she's not actually pregnant NO SPOILERS so idk. starting season 5 soon!! <33

YAY. Once again I'm so late in responding to this that you might be halfway through the next season already, idk, let me know.

I know what you mean about Shane, when I first watched it I was like "no waaaaaaay augh too young" but yeah, it's not that surprising given the family situation he's in and the examples that've been set for him. I did like that it was in a threesome though, and that he WAS freaking out about it instead of being like "everything is cool, I can handle this." You know?

OMG, LISA, IKR? It is REALLY interesting the way he seems so desperate to take on this 'Dad' role, like first he tries it with Megan and that doesn't work so then he actually tries it with NANCY and that doesn't work, and then Lisa, and it's like he's just stuck in this loop. And he's so in denial about it as well, as if that's normal teenage boy behaviour. I mean, sure, probably a lot of teenage boys want to be with an older woman, but not to actually try and make a FAMILY with one.

OH MY GOD, THE PICTURES. (They were super hot, right??) And Shaaaane, he is so fucked up. Omg, I never thought about him actually wanting someone to find out, because he seemed so clueless about other people hearing him masturbate before (like being all "I was scratching!" to Silas) but it did seem weird how he put the book away while Andy was watching. Omg I love that it was Andy who found them, though, the way he just didn't judge at all and just felt BAD for him, it was so sweet in such a weird way. (Ughhh I should work on my Shane/Andy bonding-over-Nancy fic.)

Omg, okay, I can't say anything about the whole pregnancy thing and you're probably already on s5 and working it out now anyway, but. Yes. DRAMATIC FINALE.
